From the life of a cobot - Safety first

Working alongside others has always been my passion, whether it's in production, the warehouse, or beyond. What matters most to me is working closely with my colleagues. I thrive when we collaborate smoothly, when everything flows effortlessly, and the whole process operates like a well-oiled machine. The satisfaction of creating something as a team is what inspired me to become a collaborative lightweight robot.

My name is Yu 5 Industrial, and I consider myself a fine motorist. As a lightweight robot, I specialize in tasks that demand a high level of precision. This distinguishes me from traditional industrial robots, which are more powerful but less sensitive. These traditional robots prefer to operate alone, often behind safety barriers or isolated from other machines.

Industrial robots were the pioneers in supporting production, making them the most well-known. They’re a vital part of Industry 4.0 and helped drive the revolution forward. Now, with Industry 5.0, the focus has shifted to human-machine collaboration, and that’s where lightweight robots like us come in!

As working with people is my passion, safety is my top priority. These four safety functions are particularly important to me:

1. Safely limited speed

I always monitor my speed closely and follow my operator's instructions with care. Once I know my speed limit, I never exceed it—regardless of the momentum. Even when I'm moving at speeds over 2 meters per second, I remain fully in control. This predictability ensures my colleagues can always gauge my movements and work alongside me with ease.

2. Safely limited position

I’m fully aware of my limits and adhere to them strictly. I only move within the working area defined by my operator and never go beyond it. If I happen to stray, I automatically return to my last known position. This rarely happens and only when I need to react to specific variables. In these situations, my operator has two options: either I trigger an emergency stop or switch to a reduced mode, slowing down my movements significantly. This ensures my colleagues can work safely alongside me at all times.

3. Safely limited force

I’m especially proud of this safety feature, which distinguishes me from other industrial and collaborative lightweight robots. My tactile capabilities allow me to gently touch objects and assess the necessary pressure independently. This helps me handle fragile objects with care and collaborate safely with my colleagues. If I unexpectedly make contact with a colleague, I stop within a matter of milliseconds and switch to free-guide mode, allowing them to easily push me away. How do I achieve this? Thanks to advanced, highly sensitive torque sensors in each axis, I can measure the forces and torques on my joints, which give me precise control over the pressure I apply.

4. My emergency stop

As a team player, I prioritize my colleagues’ comfort and safety. That’s why I’m fine with having my emergency stop switch always accessible. If needed, they can easily turn me off with the press of a button. I’ll immediately stop all movement and remain in my current position.

Certification by TÜV-SÜD

Qualifications are important to me, which is why I was especially pleased when TÜV SÜD awarded me the certification for safe industrial use. This includes compliance with the IEC 61508, ISO 13849-1, and ISO 10218 standards. The certification focuses on robot controller safety, along with features like power and force limitation and safe collision detection, ensuring both industrial and collaborative applications are covered. In terms of safety, this is truly the top tier.

Safety first

To sum it up, I can confidently say that I’m a reliable and safe colleague. In fact, you could even say I make the workplace safer by taking on the monotonous, unpleasant, and potentially hazardous tasks that would otherwise fall to my colleagues.

While some people enjoy working with others, I was literally made for it.
